The Oscars have slowly become irrelevant. The entire nomination process is obtuse and completely void of any transparency. Spike Lee and Jada Pinkett Smith aren’t even the first person to boycott in recent memory. Marlon Brando boycotted the awards the year that he won for The Godfather. And the same issues that Brando protested against in the 1970’s are still occurring to this day. So the Academy has had at least 40 years to take heed of what people are saying to them, and they chose not to listen. Therefore, when viewers choose to stop watching the event on television or when artists boycott attending the ceremony altogether, how can anyone be surprised? Spike Lee was offered the Lifetime Achievement Award, by the way.
