Militant Somalia: The Fight Against al Shabaab

Al Shabaab has been a threat to Somalia for almost a decade. In 2013, the group claimed responsibility for the Westgate Mall attacks in Nairobi, Kenya, where 67 people were killed. This signaled a shift in the scope of al Shabaab’s tactics, which until this point had been focused within Somalia, where the group was in control of much of the country.

Over the past few years, with help from the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), many cities that were once al Shabaab strongholds were taken back by Somali forces.

VICE News correspondent Simon Ostrovsky traveled to Somalia in the wake of AMISOM taking back the coastal city of Barawe — where Ikrima, the man believed to be behind the Westgate attacks, resided — to investigate how al Shabaab evolved from a localized threat to a regional one.

  1. After the Islamization of Somali by the last military government, Al-shaabab was form by Somali government as a guerrilla unit during the Ogaden war against Ethiopia, but now al-shaabab is Somali piece of shit. This is the beauty of Islam!

  2. Entered 4th year and still a small progress has been made over some regions of the state. However, with Al-Shabaab's attack in October last year it had caused a sit back with loss of human lives. Furthermore, the new elected President is creating ways to counter attack future events.

  3. I Hope we defend against the UN that playing the part of the terrorise group of Alshabab and also the part of the good guys to brain wash the people in Somalia which they done it to the most of the Somalians today whether they are the government or the terrorise by their help of some Arabic countries like Saudi Arabia and UAE..

  9. Something deeper is happening in these attacks. The funding. Who is funding rag tag Al Shabaab? UAE and Saudi Arabia. Money goes to Ethiopia where they then provide technical assistance to the terrorists. Somalis need to wake up from their deep sleep and fight their enemies.
