This Virginia Island Is Literally Sinking Into The Sea (HBO)

“When you see fish swimming on your road, you’ve got major problems,” Dave Schulte, a marine biologist with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, told VICE News correspondent Arielle Duhaime-Ross. “That’s for sure.”

Welcome to Tangier Island, on the Virginia side of the Chesapeake Bay, where 500 residents are struggling to cope with rising waters that are claiming more of their land each year.

“I refuse to become a climate change refugee,” Tangier Island Mayor James “Ooker” Eskridge said. Yet that’s exactly what community residents will be facing later this century without intervention, Schulte projected.

Since 1850, the island has lost two-thirds of its land mass. Many residents believe building a $30 million sea wall is Tangier’s only hope of saving what remains of the island, but Congress hasn’t approved funding for the wall.

“If we don’t get a sea wall, this is what you’ll find on Tangier in a few years: remnants of homes,” Tangier Island resident Carol Pruitt-Moore said.

Schulte warns that Tangier isn’t an isolated case but rather a sign of things to come. “As climate change is impacting us, we’re going to be making these decisions over and over again all over the country,” he said. “Who are we going to move? What are we going to do?”

This segment originally aired Oct. 24, 2016, on VICE News Tonight on HBO.

  1. Great to see the effects of climate change in our lifetime. I was first to Tangier Island in 1997 – 20 years ago. The island has a wonderful history. Why isn’t the island crowd funding a solution? Have they not been tracking the effects of sea level rise over the last two decades? So SAD that Washington is bought by the oil and gas industry. Ask their shareholders for the $30M needed (which is $60K/resident).

  2. Climate change is real…. The idea of man not part of the problem is crazy…. As to how much…. we don't know…. But the thing is, we are not helpless to do something about it…. and the more we say it is natural thing, the more we became irresponsible…. We use resources beyond what our planet can give…Just think of how much left do we have right now for our growing population…

  3. 30 million? 500 people? And they knew it was happening for generations? I hope they don’t use my tax money for the seawall. The math just does not add up. But the government should do something to help these people.

  4. This place needs my new invention, boat plane motorcycle shoes. The concept goes like this, they are shoes that also are boats planes or a motorcycle. How is this possible you ask? Good question, here is my answer. God. And if you don't believe in this product then you don't believe in God. So buy my shoes, the boat is not an option its a life saver. These shoes do have an option for a life preserver. It will float if your shoes sink. Boom like your floating again. Your welcome.

  5. But global warming and sea level rise are a "HOAX!" So all this water is just a hoax created by Democrats! It's true! Just ask our idiot President and the rest of the science-denying Republicans in congress! If you vote Republican, the island will stop sinking! Of course, you have to clutch your BUY-BULL close to your chest and PRAY, TOO! JEBUS will save you!
