The Worst Job In New York: Immigrant America

Subscribe to VICE News here:

Milking cows is a dirty, monotonous job, and as we found out in our latest episode of Immigrant America, it’s not a job many unemployed Americans are willing to do. But for some reason the government doesn’t give dairy farms a way to recruit foreign workers legally, so most feel forced to hire illegal immigrants. This makes the farms and their workers easy targets for immigration authorities looking to fill deportation quotas. We went to upstate New York to try to understand the cat and mouse game going on between dairy farms and immigration authorities. We found a lot of wasted taxpayer money, racial profiling, and a broken system that unnecessarily treats family farmers and hardworking immigrants like criminals.

  1. Another is why the us arrest for crossing instead if you catch somebody crossing we need to inmidely bring them to the border let them loose not in prison to much of a cost it don't make sense. We spend more by jail them $$

  2. We need immigrants cuss we add a nation when times are good nobody cares about the down and dirty work and now that we don't have enough jobs. Still nobody cannot do the job all you hear complaints about long hours and the type of job .at the end of the day we all need each other

  3. made it 1:37 in before i could tell this was a slanted story.

I've watched a few stories on Family dairy farms closing because they can't compete with factory farms. Wish you hadn't said they can't get workers legally thats just outrageous. Seen some good reporting on Vice but this one isn't that.

  4. "Hispanic" come from the word "Hispania". Not to be too much of a wikipedia-pants, but "Hispania" is Spain's latin name (how Roman's used to call it). Pretty awkward to find everybody in this video using the words "mexican" and "hispanic" interchangeably. Mexican and Hispanic are not synonymous. Mexico and Spain are some (minimum) 12 hours flight away, and in different continents (much for the surprise of many). No bad vibes, I love Vice videos, I just found that "little detail" way too misleading for the audience. Love. Peace.

  5. Get a proper visa program, make them work legally with temporary visas that need to be renewed after 3-5 years. Put restrictions and rights in this “visa program” and everybody wins. What’s so difficult? The USA has a broken migration system.

  6. US v. Martinez-Fuerte established that racial profiling in this context was permissible, and the case has been used to justify various other forms of racial profiling; we are starting to improve as a country (very slowly), but there is institutionalized racism that requires an institutional response

  7. My wife's family owns and operates a dairy in Southeastern New Mexico. I'm also employed at this dairy. 95% of the employees are Caucasian. Americans will do these jobs. But not for $6 to $9 an hour! We start at $14 an hour. If you're worth keeping you're guaranteed $.50 an hour raise every 6 months if you're not worth keeping then we fire you and find someone else.

  8. If they are doing a good job, paying their bills including taxes I see no reason why you should just kick them out. They are just doing what they know best in hopes to get at least temp citizenship. I wish there was a better way to help these people who in the end are just good people trying to live. 🙁

  9. I'm a white american teenager in virginia and i work on a dairy farm. yea, its incredibly hard. i come home after shift every day covered in shit head to toe and incredibly tired. the boss wants to hire americans only, so we have a hard time finding enough people some days. but dont be mistaken, this isnt all immigrant work. theres still alot of hard working americans out there willing to do this, but people need to stop making teenagers think they're too special to work their ass off

  10. In NZ, we have to do a work test – which means you have to demonstrate you can't fill the vacancy with a native NZ'der. If you can demonstrate this, then you can sponsor a work visa. We have critical skills lists, which means work visa's are immediately granted for anyone filling that role. Seems like this could work for these workers. Dairy workers with these skills are in shortage all over the world –

  11. Pretty sure if no one else was there to do it supply would go down, prices would go up, wages would then go up high enough to have an actual legal worker. Just no one wants to pay $10-15 for a gallon of milk

  12. Pradeep Ram: Many prisons are privately owned. They contract and compete for jobs against non-criminals. They undercut the wages, place prisoners in the jobs for less. I really would not want anybody with a criminal history handling my animals. The next time you get a call from a telemarketer, there is a good chance you are speaking to somebody in a prison. They cannot write anything down, but those with good memories can tell their visitors who you are and where you live. A lot of your personal information comes up on a screen when a telemarketer calls you. Think about it.

  13. 10 years and he didnt apply for a visa or try to become a citizen? If they try to become citizens i have no problem. Ya im a white female work ing agriculture and i would rather work with hispanics over white bc they dont mind the hard work, but they do need to follow the rules just like the rest of us

  14. Cant wait to see people, out there doing these jobs bc they cant do it , it is called work for a reason. Good luck trying to do a good days worth of work . No work no food. Get it i know work and i am a i guess white woman even tho i call myself a Heinz 57 bc i have a lil bit of every thing in me, i have wash toilets to rebuild transmissions in my life and i know work now my body is wore out.. lol but cant wait to see you pencil pushers ,have to get off your butts and plant food, clean pig pens etc , to whatever to make it.
