Experimenting on Animals: Inside The Monkey Lab

VICE News gets rare access to Europe’s largest primate testing facility, the Biomedical Primate Research Center (BPRC) in the Netherlands, where scientists try to find cures for the worst human diseases, while claiming to provide unparalleled care for the monkeys in the hope they live the most animal friendly life before and during testing.

Once selected, inside the laboratories, monkeys are shaved, anesthetized, and experimented on for research purposes.

Yet the center remains controversial. Protestors gather regularly in front of its gates and there are calls in the Dutch parliament to close the site and switch to alternatives for testing on primates.

But as the BPRC explains to VICE News, modern science isn’t there yet. In the meantime, it still uses about 200 monkeys a year for a slew of experiments to find cures, and even replacements for primate testing in the future.

  1. I'm no expert but I do know this, moaning and groaning in here accomplishes nothing. It's just a waste of time. If people are serious not just laying lip service serious get into politics, run to become senators, prime minister's and presidents and change laws.

  2. Places like these are for people with murderous intention to please the urge to kill, its sick and should not be legal to test on live subjects it's not needed and everyone that works there is sick and syco. It's worse then murder its torture, putting diseases in these animals, is just wrong .

  3. All the people in the comment section are against this , but do you know how much these experiments have done for medicine and to improve human living conditions , are you willing to volunteer instead of these animals or is it okay if an unknown drug gets prescribed for your loved ones ? . you would celebrate when a medicine would cure your pains , are you willing to allow hundreds of thousands of children to die because no better drugs can be developed , or could you stop using all the fancy make up and cosmetics you love , no you wont . I love animals and this is surely sad but there is no other option at the moment , and you should not just get triggered and be over concerned just because it affects you emotionally .

  4. I’m literally crying like my heart hurt for those monkeys I wish I could actually do something that we wouldn’t have to use the monkeys but Sadly we do to prevent plagues
